I’m mapping lenticels, bud scale scars, and vascular bundle patterns on one-year apple wood and need solid references that show species-level cross-sections with labeled bundles, pith form, and cambium thickness. I use a 10× hand lens and a small USB scope, but I’m looking for horticulture-grade atlases or databases so my plates match the diagnostic details growers rely on in winter ID.

Quick tip from my bench: a 0.05% toluidine blue O swipe on a fresh apple slice makes the cambium/phloem boundary jump out under a USB scope, and a drop of glycerin keeps it from curling. Caveat: those atlases aren’t species-by-species for every Malus, but they nail the diagnostic ranges growers use.
